Audition Requirements
In order to be admitted into the graduate music program, you must
complete a live audition in your principal area of applied music. This
audition is heard by the Graduate Admissions Committee. This committee
consists of the coordinator of graduate studies, the major professor in your
discipline, and a third member of the graduate faculty.
The audition process consists of three parts, though they do not need
to be completed on the same day:
- Performance--perform prepared selections for the Graduate Admissions
Committee. Scales and sight reading will also be a part of this process.
The major professor in your discipline can aid you in repertoire
selections.
- Piano--you must demonstrate piano proficiency. Piano
proficiency may be demonstrated in one of several ways:
- a statement on the undergraduate transcript
- a letter from the undergraduate music department certifying successful
completion of piano proficiency
- successful completion of the WCU undergraduate piano proficiency examination.
If necessary, this exam is usually given at the beginning of classes
in the fall semester.
- Diagnostic--you must pass a diagnostic examination in music history
and music theory. Students who dispaly a deficiency in either music
history or music theory must successfully complete a review course in one
or both areas. This test is not currently being administered.
