Music at Western Carolina University
 
 

Below are the audition requirements for each applied area. Keep in mind that to be fully admitted into the School of Music as a major or minor, you must:

  • Apply to the School. Download the Application Form, fill it out, and mail it to the address listed on the form.
  • Be admitted to Western Carolina University. Note: admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the music School.
  • Complete a satisfactory live audition for the Music faculty.
  • Submit a letter of reference concerning your prospect for professional study.
  • Complete the Music Aptitude/Placement Exam on the audition day or during the first week of classes.

For the 2007-2008 academic year, the School of Music’s Audition Day is Saturday 23 February 2008. Other dates may be arranged by contacting the School Office at (828) 227-7242. You must audition by 1 April 2008 in order to receive full consideration for admission and scholarships.

Undergraduate Audition Requirements

Please see our Audition Solo List for suggestions in preparing your audition repertoire.

Winds, Strings, and Percussion

  1. Play a prepared solo (accompaniment not required). Percussionists audition on snare, tympani, and marimba.
  2. Play scales (as many as possible). Percussionists demonstrate rudiments.
  3. Sight read.

Keyboard Instruments

  1. Play two prepared solos, contrasting in style.
  2. Play scales.
  3. Sight read.

Voice

  1. Sing two prepared solos from memory. Please furnish your own accompanist, if possible.
  2. Demonstrate vocal range.
  3. Sight read.
